The Income Tax Department offers an online facility for paying your Income Tax. This can be your Advance Tax Payment or your Self-Assessment Tax Payment.

Step 1. Select Challan 280 for paying your Income Tax Due

Step 2. Choose Assessment Year option correctly.

- For individuals making tax payments, select (0021)INCOME-TAX (OTHER THAN COMPANIES) under tax applicable
- Fill in your PAN and Assessment Year correctly.
- Fill in the address, phone number and email address
- Fill in the Bank Name and Captcha Code
- Please choose the Assessment Year correctly when paying Tax due.
- Self-Assessment Tax: If the financial year has ended, this is the option you should select.
- Advance Tax is deposited during the Financial Year. Proper advance tax payments every quarter during the Financial Year help avoid Interest penalty on tax due under Section 234.

For regular advance tax payments

(300) SELF ASSESSMENT TAX
Choose this option if you are paying taxes after the financial year has ended.

(400) TAX ON REGULAR ASSESSMENT
Select this option when demand has been raised by the Income Tax Department.
Step 3.
You will be redirected to the Net banking page. Double check the
information entered here. And enter the income tax to be paid in the
income tax field. You can leave surcharge, education cess, interest and
penalty blank.

Step 4.
This is your Challan 280. You will be able to see details about your
payment on taxpayer’s counterfoil and BSR code and challan number on
the right side box.

After making payment of tax due, what should you do?
After you have made the tax payment, you need to
report this information in your Income Tax Return. You can do this
within ClearTax by "Adding an Entry" under the Taxes Paid page.
Select the “Self Tax Payments” tab and enter the BSR code and challan number from Challan 280.
Note that BSR code is a 7-digit number and challan number is of 5 digits.
